AMA Supercross made its annual visit to Indianapolis, and 60,085 fans filled Lucas Oil Stadium. Those fans watch O’Neal’s Blake Baggett continue his strong comeback from shoulder surgery. Baggett took fifth in Indy, his best result of the season, aboard his powerful Suzuki RM-Z450.
Baggett came out of timed qualifying 13th with a time of 48.358 seconds. He then had a lot of attention focused on him by winning Semi 2 to qualify for the main. In the main Baggett ran 11th on the first lap. Then, in one of his best laps of the year, on lap two Baggett used the nimble handling of his Yoshimura Suzuki to move up to eighth. But his charge wasn’t over, Baggett continued to battle, temporarily dropping backed to ninth on the fourth lap before working his way back into the top five by the end of the 20-lap final.
The top-five finish showed just how far Baggett has come after missing most of the first half of the season recovering from shoulder surgery and then again missing more races after re-injuring the shoulder in his comeback.
“Fifth-place for the night, definitely my best race of the year,” Baggett smiled. “It’s good. We’re coming along, plugging away and going in the right direction, definitely improving. We’re just going to build on it from here. I’m excited.”
And in spite of scoring his best result of the season, Baggett’s competitive spirit continued to show through as he commented how close he was to fourth place Trey Canard, with Baggett always looking to push for even better results.
